god was a writer
and penned the book of life
just to wonder whether
it’d make a good flick

now god was a director
breathing action into matter
and god’s choir of stagehands
helped build the globe theater

but god is an audience lately
critical and shrewd
and observant, but most of all
rapt, because a god must be able
to amaze itself

and god,
dwelling in the meta,
insideandoutside the narrative,
can applaud, build, and perform
simultaneously

so there is some of god in
the street juggler –
except god works with about
4, 000 balls at once,
maybe even more
